10 Ways to Enrich Our Relationships Through a Belief in Competence

"1. Don’t define people by their diagnosis. Remember playing tag?
Nobody wanted to be IT. And if you were IT, you wanted to get rid of IT because being IT was stigmatizing, a detriment, and something undesirable—that was the game; being IT was to be avoided and feared. Remaining IT longer than we’d like becomes challenging to catch up to the others, to belong, and to feel
accepted.

When we define someone by their diagnosis, our perception of them may become something to be dreaded: someone defective, someone who has the IT with which we don’t wish to risk an association of any sort. For that person, this attitude is the lubricant that greases the wheel for the vicious cycle of a selffulfilling prophecy. That is, when people define you as having IT and that’s all you know of yourself, you will reflect back precisely what others project upon you. This is a natural and defensive reaction; and if you don’t speak or can’t articulate your feelings, your outpourings of “behaviors” will only further validate the diagnosis (hence the vicious cycle)."
That's the first.  Read nine more and feel enriched!

Intensive Week Success

3/9/2012

The intensive week with families (13th -18th August) was highly successful.  We worked with the children on one-to-one or two-to-one sessions involving creative activities throughout the week and ended the week with a celebration day where the whole family could take part in creative activities, taste some gluten-free and casein free baking or just chat and exchange experiences.  The families were great and really interacted with the activities as well as some taster treatments (counselling, massage, Reiki and EFT).
The children made puppets, used the puppets to make little films and made bracelets and keyrings.  The children also had the opportunity to join in with an interactive Relax-kids session.
The families each made a colourful pillow case for the child involved in the project to remember and celebrate the child's great qualities.

Intensive Week next week

We're getting ready for our intensive week with the families that have signed up
for the Case Studies pilot project from 13 August to 18 August.  Over this week we will work 3 or 4 families affected by Autism.  These are families that are involved in our current Case Studies Pilot project.  The week wll culminate in the production of a person centred plan for the child or young person with Autism and a Fun Finale on Saturday 18th August where we will bring all the families together to take part in creative workshops including mask-making, circus skills, music, drama and dance.  The theme of all the workshops is "Celebrating Our Family".
The Case Studies Pilot is taking place so that we can gather evidence to show that our interventions work.  We intend to raise funding to enable more families to access our services for free!  If you think this might be for you, even if Autism is only suspected, not diagnosed yet we'd really like to hear from you.

Case Studies are up and running

We started our case studies last week.  Over the summer we plan to work with several families affected by autism
(even un-diagnosed).  We will be working together to identify needs, devise strategies and develop person centred plans with each family.

Using a variety of techniques including creative activities and intensive interaction our experienced staff will work with families to help them get to the heart of an issue and create a realistic action plan.

There are still a couple of slots available so get in touch if you are interested in being included in this exciting pilot
project.
