Stress Busters at Little-borough Primary School
Enlightening ran a stress busters course over 12 weeks at our school in the autumn term. As a school we had identified 12 children in years 5 and 6 who had a range of problems. Amongst these were children who struggled with anxiety, anger, socialising with their peer group.
Over the course of the weeks the children made significant gains in their confidence and their ease at speaking in front of a group.
4 separate parents have approached me to ask if their children could take part as well. Unfortunately the group was already formed and this was not possible. Although as a school we will endeavour to put something in place, we benefited significantly from the skills and expertise the Enlightening team brought.
Our head teacher spoke to individual children involved in the course and they spoke animatedly about the activities and spoke positively about the time in the group.
One child explained that she felt a lot better and was able to go to sleep and calm herself down because of the counting method and breathing she had been shown at stress busters. This is a significant achievement and one that will make a difference to the life of this child.
The children within the group were a mixture of the two age groups. Some of the children at the beginning did not really know each other well, however as time passed they became a small network who support each other.
One of the boys involved in the group has problems with his anger and often his perception of the situation is not an accurate one. We have noticed since his time in the group he has on occasions shown more empathy towards others.
Without hesitation we would use this course in school again. As a school we feel that it is definitely something that is needed as the pressure rises for our young children. Looking after their mental health and well-being has to be a priority and time spent in groups like that should help later on in life and maybe help to prevent future referrals to Healthy Young Minds. The course offered would actually benefit all young people.
